Parent Outreach Connector

Brandi first connected with PEAK in 2006 as a mom seeking information when her son was born with Down syndrome. She attended PEAK’s Accommodations and Modifications workshop and was “hooked” for life! PEAK has helped Brandi and her family to become amazing educational advocates for their son. Brandi joined the PEAK team so she could help ensure other parents and professionals could continue to have access to this invaluable resource. Brandi’s involvement with PEAK changed her fundamentally. She walked into that first workshop feeling sorry for her son’s preschool teacher thinking there was no way she could “handle” him or his educational needs. Brandi walked out of that workshop thinking the complete opposite! She not only learned that there were tons of ways to help her son learn, connect with peers, and stay on task, but also that he could be just as much of a teacher to the school community as he could be a learner. At a PEAK Conference on Inclusive Education, Brandi was privileged to attend a session presented by a self advocate who said something that has impacted every decision she has made for her son since. He said, "I am not broken, I don't need to be fixed. I just need support." In PEAK, Brandi found an organization that helps parents and school staff understand what that support looks like and how to respectfully provide it to the people who need it. Brandi’s “therapy” is designing jewelry, and it brings her joy to see others love and wear her creations. Brandi’s feels that her son, Clay, has taught her so much more than she could ever teach him and she is thankful for him, his smile, and his hugs every day.
